Abstract

1280834 Stud and socket fastener F T PRODUCTS 2 Oct 1969 [2 Oct 1968 22 Oct 1968 11 Nov 1968 27 June 1969] 46829/68 50022/ 68 53225/68 and 32682/69 Heading E2B A two part fastener for attaching two apertured panels together, comprising a stud portion e.g. Fig 5 and a socket portion e.g. Fig 3, the stud portion comprising a shank 28, adapted in use to extend through the aperture in one of the panels 12, a flange 29 at one end of the shank adapted in use to abut a surface of said panel 12 to limit the insertion of the shank therethrough and a stud 30 projecting from the opposite side of the flange from the shank, and adapted in use to extend into the aperture in the other panel, the socket portion being formed with a bore 17 open at one end to receive at least the end of the stud 30 and with abutment means (Fig. 6) which is spaced from the said one end of the bore and which, in use, is adapted to abut a surface of the said other panel and limit insertion of the socket portion through the aperture in the other panel 11, wherein the stud and the socket portion are provided with means which interengage when the stud is inserted into the bore of the socket portion to resist withdrawal of the stud from the bore. The means to interengage the stud in the socket may comprise an annular shoulder 33a which may be on a rib 33 facing the flange 29 on the stud portion 16 and a recess 22 in the wall of the bore of the socket portion 15. Alternatively the recess may be in the form of slots in the wall of the socket to receive the annular rib (Fig. 7, not shown). In a further embodiment (Figs. 9, 10 and 11, not shown) the stud is formed with a recess and the socket portion is formed with a projection and also the abutments in the form of resilient lugs dispersed with and the flange, such as 19, forms the abutment. In this case the recess may be annular and the projection may be an annular rib or the stud may be generally cylindrical and have a circumferential recess and the socket portion formed with a circumferential rib on the wall of the bore, the periphery of the rib being generally oval and adapted to deform as the stud is forced into the bore and snap engaged into the recess. In a further embodiment (Fig. 13 to 15, not shown) the stud of the stud portion is provided with a series of annular serrations or tongues which engage the recess of the bore of the socket or alternatively the bore in the socket may be in the form of a series of serrations or tongues which engage the shoulder of the stud or alternatively the stud and bore may both have serrations or tongues which interengage each other. The bore of the socket portion may have a tapered entry and its abutment means may be in the form of a flange which may be a circular button head. In the embodiment in Fig. 6 two abutments 25, 26 extend from the flange 19 of the socket portion and abut the panel 11.
