Abstract

876,304. Aerials. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 10, 1960 [Feb. 13, 1959], No. 4690/60. Class 40(7) The invention relates to an aerial system of variable directivity comprising two spaced coaxial conductive members formed as surfaces of revolution between which energy is fed through a waveguide at a variable point along the peripheral gap between them, the shape and spacing of the members being such that a beam of energy is radiated in a plane at right angles to the axis of revolution at a position diametrically opposite the feed point. Such a system is sometimes known as a "Luneberg lens aerial". One form is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 where the two conductive members 1 and 2 are so shaped that energy from a peripheral feed point 5 travelling through the lens by various paths (such as 7, 8 or 9) produces in-phase radiation on the line 13 to give a collimated beam diametrically opposite the point 5. As shown in Fig. 1 the members 1 and 2 are provided with flared edges 3, 4 round the lens periphery and the waveguide feed is terminated in a wedge-shaped feed unit 18 movable round between these edges and having conductive surfaces spaced from and parallel to them. According to the invention a groove 19, 20 having a depth equal to a quarter of the operating wavelength is formed in the conductive surfaces of the unit 18, the groove extending round the outlet 5, of the guide at a distance of approximately an odd multiple of a quarter wavelength. The groove causes a high impedance to be presented to energy attempting to pass through the gaps between flared edges 3, 4 and unit 18. To further reduce back radiation the outer surfaces of the body 18 beyond the groove may be covered with a layer 21 of lossy material such as graphite.
