Abstract

978,509. Aerials. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. June 13, 1961 [June 30, 1960], No. 21289/61. Heading H4A. An aerial system comprises an aerial feed arrangement 13 selectively radiating over a band of microwave frequencies linearly or circularly polarized waves in a feed radiation beam substantially symmetrical about the beam axis, a sub-reflector 12 having a concave shape in one sectional plane and a cylindrical convex shape in an orthogonal plane so as to narrow the feed radiation pattern in the one plane and to widen it in the orthogonal plane, the feed arrangement being positioned at the focus of the concave curve of the sub-reflector, and a part-cylindrical main reflector 11 which is curved in the orthogonal plane to produce a fan-shaped beam having a narrow orthogonal angle coverage. In the embodiment feed arrangement 13 is a circular waveguide 14 with circular aperture 15 and a quarter-wave conductive flange 16 which extends about, and flush with, aperture 15; waveguide 14 is rotatable with respect to coupled circular waveguide 17. A quarter-wave plate 19 is incorporated for producing circularly polarized waves at will.
