Abstract

A surface provided with a patternwise adhesive coating is coated with a transfer foil having a vacuum-coated metal or metal alloy outer layer and the foil is drawn off leaving the metal or metal alloy adhering to the adhesive coated parts of the surface. The surface may be of air-retentive material such as woven or knitted textile fabric, compressed or adhesively-bonded unwoven fabric, leather or paper, and the metal may be aluminium, copper, silver, gold, or copper-aluminium alloy. The foil may be successively coated with gold and aluminium. The foil may be of cellulose acetate or butyrate, regenerated cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, a polyamide, a polyester, rubber, or paper impregnated or coated on both sides with a synthetic resin. The adhesive may be a heat-activatable resin such as a solution of an alkylated phenol formaldehyde resin to which may be added a solution of butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer with or without a masked polyisocyanate, or may also be a polyvinyl ether or ester. Before vacuum-coating, the foil may be coated with glycerol, sorbitol, paraffin oil, a silicone oil, linseed oil, or a phenolformaldehyde resin with or without the addition of a polyisocyanate. Before vacuum-coating, the foil may be coated with a translucent colour coating or lake which is transferred with the metal. In Example 1, a dyed cotton fabric is printed locally with a solution of an alkylated phenol formaldehyle resin and dried, and a cellulose acetate foil vacuum-coated with aluminium is coated thereon by a heated calender. The aluminium adheres to the adhesive-printed areas when the foil is drawn off. In Example 2, the transfer foil consists of polyester foil successively coated with silicone oil, gold, and aluminium. After drawing off the foil, the fabric is heated. In Example 3, a transfer foil of polyvinyl chloride vacuum-coated with copper-aluminium alloy is used. In Example 4, a transfer foil of regenerated cellulose successively coated with cellulose acetate solution containing a golden-yellow pigment and with aluminium is used. In Example 5, the transfer foil consists of a paper strip coated in three stripes with red, green and yellow dyes and then vaccuum-coated with aluminium is used. In Example 6, three transfer foils coated respectively with red, green and blue dye compositions and each vacuum-coated with copper are employed. Specifications 722,409 and 767,714 are referred to.
