Abstract

A coating from a transfer foil 18 is applied to a material to be printed such as individual shoots or a strip of labels 11. The transfer foil and the material to be printed are brought together by heated nip rollers 17. A thermoplastic adhesive or an adhesive toner is applied to the material to be printed by a printer 13 controlled by a computer 14 in a predetermined pattern corresponding to an electronically stored digital image. The coating is transferred only to those parts of the material to be printed upon which adhesive has previously been printed. First and second printers may provide variable and fixed adhesive patterns. A printer 21 and laminator 22 may additionally print data on and laminate the coated material. <IMAGE>

Description

PRINTING APPARATUS AND PROCESS This invention relates to a printing apparatus and process which may be used for applying a transfer coating from a foil onto a material to be printed.
It is known from, for example, British Patent Specification No.
869076 to secure a metal coating carried by a transfer foil to a textile fabric. Heat-activated adhesive is printed onto the fabric in a pattern which corresponds to portions of the fabric to which it is desired to secure the metal coating. The transfer foil is then pressed by a heated roller against the fabric such that the coating contacts the adhesive. As the transfer foil ancl fabric are separated, the metal coating is peeled from the foil only in regions that contact the adhesive. Thus the metal coating is transferrecl to the fabric in the pattern in which the adhesive was initially printed.
Transfer foil printing techniques as described in outline above have been used to produce for example labels for products. For each label to be printed it is necessary to prepare a separate printing plate. This means that all the labels prociuced with one printing plate must be identical and cannot carry for esaiiiple ciate of production information or individual label nIm1ers. Furthermore, whenever a machine which has been produciig one label is to be used in the production of another label, the machine I::lust ibe modified by replacing one label printing plate with another. This significantlv affects machine productivity, particularly when short production runs are required. Thus the known transfer foil printing techniques are neither versatile nor adaptable.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the problems outlined above.
According to the present invention. there is provided a printing apparatus comprising means for delivering a supply of material to be printed, means for delivering a sul)lDls of a foil carrying on one side thereof a transfer coating to bc transferrecl to the material to be printed, an applicator for bringillg together the material and the said one side of the foil, and a printer upstream of the applicator for applying adhesive to the material in a pattern corresponding to the portions of the material to which the transfer coating is to be adhered, wherein the printer is electronically controlled to print adhesive on the material in accordance with a digitally stored image.
The printer may be arranged to apply adhesive to the material from a static printing head beneath which the material is advanced to the applicator. Thus the printer may be a dot-addressable Printer.
Conventional forms of printer may be used, for example laser printers, electrostatic Printers, ink jet printers or LED printers. If thermoplastic adhesive is used the adhesive can be activated by passing it through a heated nip roller in the applicator.
The present invention also provides a printing process in which a supply of material to be printed and a foil carrying on one side thereof a transfer coating are delivered to an applicator which brings together the material and the said one side of the foil, and an adhesive is applied to the material upstream of the applicator in a pattern corresponding to the portions of the material to which the transfer coating is to be applied, wherein adhesive is dispensed onto the material in accordance with a digitally stored image.
The material to be printed may be suppliecl in zhe form of a continuous strip or in the form of a series of individual sheets.
Given that the pattern in which the adhesive is to be applied is stored digitally the pattern can be readily changed, avoiding machine down time when changing from one production run to another and enabling consecutively formed patterns to be altered, for example to take product identification numbers. Thus, the system in accordance with the invention gives a versatility anci adaptability which is a remarkable improvement upon the prior art.
A product such as a label can be produced using a single adhesive printer for all of the required image or two or more individual printers, for example a first printer printing a variable component of the required pattern ancl the second printer printing a fixed component of the required pattern.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing which illustrates a label printing production line incorporating printing apparatus according to this invention.
The label production line comprises, at one end, a supply reel 10 of label stock 11 which is unwound continuously from the reel 10 and, after being subjected to printing and possibly (i.e. cptional) other operations is wound onto a collection reel 12 for storage and/or dispatch.
The label production process is, therefore, a continuous one and in accordance with this invention the label stock 11 is passed through a printer 13 (for example a laser printer) controlled by a computer 14 to have applied to the upper surface of the label stock 11, at spaced intervals, an adhesive format or image 15 (an adhesive toner for example), the content of which is determined by the computer 14.
The latter has an input keyboard generally inclicated at 16 and consequently the printer 13 is keyboard addressable which means that the adhesive format or image is easily and readily varied or even changed completely.
The adhesive employed in the printer 13 may be thermoplastic in nature.
After passage through the printer 13, the adhesive-applied label stock 11 passes through a heated, iight-pressure nip 17 whereat it is married at the format or image locations 15 with a hot printing foil 18 passing through the nip 17 between a supply reel 19 and a collection reel 20. The combination of heat ancl pressure causes the colour or metallisecl pigment of the foil 18 to adhere to the adhesive format or image.
The printed and foiled label stock 11 may now pass directly to the label stock collection reel 12 without being subjected to further action, or it may optionally be passed, before reaching the collection reel 12, through a printing station 21 for the application to the labels 15, 18 of fixed information or data andior a laminating station 22 with a laminate supply feed 23 and/or a die cutting station 24 for label separation from the stock strip 11.
Other label production operations may be effected on the label stock upstream or more usually downstream of the printer 13 and hot printing foil applicator nip 17.
