Abstract

<PICT:0860947/IV (a)/1> A process for the production of flexible expanded thermoplastic material comprises forming a fluid paste of the thermoplastic material and introducing it into a sealed vessel, discharging an inert gas under pressure into the lower part of the vessel so that the gas passes outwardly and upwardly through the fluid paste for dispersion therethrough, cutting off the supply of gas to the vessel and a releasing valve control means which allows the pressure differential between the interior and exterior of the vessel to discharge the contents of the vessel including all or substantially all the pressure gas therein as a creamy foaming mass through a siphon tube extending from substantially the bottom of the vessel to and through the upper part of the vessel, thorough dispersion of the gas in the fluid paste being achieved by turbulent dispersion set up during the introduction of the gas into the vessel and the withdrawal of the expanded material and gas simultaneously from the vessel. The thermoplastic material may be a mixture of a high molecular weight polyvinyl chloride resin and a non-paste forming polyvinyl chloride resin. These, in an example, are formed into a paste with the addition of tritolyl phosphate, lead silicate, barium stearate, cadmium stearate, silicone fluid, dioctyl phthalate and oleic acid. The paste is introduced (in one embodiment) into a pressure vessel 1. Gas (e.g. nitrogen or carbon dioxide) is passed in from cylinder 12 through the tube 6 provided with holes 14 and holes in the bottom of the tube, all drilled tangentially to a circle within the tube to produce turbulence in the paste when the gas is introduced. When the required pressure is reached first the closure valve 15 and then the trigger valve 17 are opened, with the nozzle 18 being directed into the mould. The mould containing the ejected creamy foamy paste is then heated at 150-165 DEG C. The foamed mass can also be coated on to textiles or leather.
