In a maximum demand electricity meter the readings are periodically recorded by a counter the numeral wheels of which are provided with code symbols. As shown, Fig. 1, the numeral wheels 1 of a counter are provided with raised code symbols 2. A record strip 5 is fed intermittently past the numeral wheels by means of a reel 9 driven by a motor 11 which is controlled by a time mechanism 10. The time mechanism 10 further controls an electromagnet 12 adapted to operate a printing hammer 13 which presses an inking ribbon 14 to the record strip and numeral wheels at predetermined constant time intervals. The numeral wheels may be aligned before printing by means not shown. In a panel 23 of a numeral wheel 24, Fig. 3, a digit is represented by code symbols such as 25 in one or more of four positions 26. Each position may represent one of the numerals 1, 2, 4, 7, the blacked-out position shown representing 1. The code symbols may take other forms and the panels may in addition be provided additionally with normal numerals. An arrangement is described (Fig. 2, not shown) wherein the symbols, contrasting in colour with the numeral wheels, are periodically photographed on to a lightsensitive strip, the readings so recorded being suitable for photo-electric scanning and transfer to punched cards.
