Abstract

Uranium is produced by reducing a uranium compound with a more electro-positive element in a reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen or coal gas and, when the reduction is complete, maintaining an atmosphere of argon above the melt while the latter cools. The uranium compound may be a halide such as the tetrachloride or its double salt with sodium chloride or uranium oxide, and the reducing metal may be an alkali metal such as sodium, or an alkaline earth metal such as calcium or magnesium, or aluminium. During the reduction the mixed reactants are preferably added to the reaction vessel in small portions at intervals. Specification 804,063 is referred to.
