A poultry nesting unit having an egg trapping device comprises a nesting tray 12, which communicates with a receiving tray 23 inaccessible to fowls, the tray 12 being movable between a nesting position and an inclined position wherein an egg laid on the tray 12 is caused to roll into the receiving tray 23, and means operable under the weight of a fowl for causing the tray 12 to move. The nesting unit is formed by end walls I, a rear wall 2, a roof 3, front wall members 4, 5, 6 and a partition wall 7 consisting of spaced members 8, 9 and 10 which divide the unit into a front (nesting) space and a rear (egg trapping) space. Transverse partition walls 11 join the front members 4, 5 and 6 to the wall 7, so forming compartments in each of which two egg trapping devices are spaced vertically. The tray 12, covered by wire mesh 16, has a rear member 13 resting freely on the wall member 9 and two forwardly extending members 14 and 15, the latter joined by a spindle 21 which engages in a slot 20 formed in the arms 18 of an alighting platform 17. The platform pivots round a spindle 19 extending between the end walls 1. The tray 23, inclined downwardly and rearwardly, is mounted on runners 24 carried by cross supports 25. In a modification a rotary turnstile device may be fitted above each tray 23 to control the movement of the eggs. The space between the lower end of the wall members 8, 9 and the trays 12 may be closed by a flap, and the space between the arms 18 may be closed by wire mesh. The wall 7 may be continuous and have suitable apertures formed in it.
