Abstract

758,930. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 7, 1953 [Sept. 10, 1952], No. 24679/53. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] . In a deflecting magnet of the kind in which polepieces 3, 4 mounted on the ends of permanent or electromagnet 13 at the side of the tube 1, and project therefrom so as to embrace the tube, the polepieces are made so that their reluctance decreases with distance from the magnet. This reduces deflection astigmatism by increasing the proportion of the flux which can reach to the ends of the polepieces. The decrease in reluctance may be achieved by increasing the width, Fig. 2, or depth, Fig. 4, of the polepieces, or by making them of material of progressively increasing permeability for example, ferrites. The change of reluctance may begin right from the magnet or may only begin half-way along the polepiece.
