Abstract

756,531. Rigid folding roofs for vehicles. FLEMMING, H. Nov. 17, 1954 [Nov. 20, 1953], No. 33236/54. Class 108 (1). A folding rigid roof comprises parts i, l and m, Figs. 1 and 2, and links n which permit the parts i and l to pivot rearwardly and downwardly to lie on top and externally of the body after the part m has been moved beneath the part l. In the lowered position the part i reaches to the top of the front seat and closes off the rear seats. The part i may be brought into position it or may be detached to open the front part of the vehicle only. The space c however is accessible through the doors o or by moving the part i and the boot d may be reached by a lid e. In another embodiment the roof part I is located inside the body when the roof is down, and is moved by two pairs of links or by one pair of links and sliding or rolling guides. The part m may be pivoted to the body a. In a further example, Fig. 5, the roof comprises a part r pivoted at 1 to the part s which in turn is pivoted to the body at 2. Window pillars t are pivoted at 3 and 4 so that when they rotate rearwardly about the points 4 the roof parts r, s are lowered in to the body and the rear seat space closed off as in Fig. 2, a part x on the body being arranged to hinge downwardly by lever and rod connections to the point 2. The roof may be lowered manually by levers and rods operated from the driving seat, or by power means, and the weights of the roof parts may be counterbalanced.
