CARROSSERIE TRANSFORMABLE. -

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
14 (voir Fig. 3).

TRANSFORMABLE BODYWORK. -
The invention relates to bodies for passenger motor cars and particularly relates to the production of a convertible body making it possible to quickly and easily transform a car into an open or closed car.
According to the invention, the transformation of the closed bodywork into open bodywork and vice versa is obtained by the fact that the upper part or balloon of the bodywork is articulated at the end of two arms supported to pivot at the ends. inner side walls of the bodywork body, while the rear part of said balloon is guided in longitudinal sliding in the box formed at the rear of the bodywork, and in which the entire balloon can be housed without that it is subjected to any transformation.
An embodiment of the invention will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Fig. 1 is a partial side elevational view of a body according to the invention with certain panels thereof removed for clarity of the drawing.
Figs. 2 and 3 are views similar to FIG. 1, showing the successive positions occupied by the movable elements of the body during the transformation of the "closed" body into "open" body.
Figs. 4 and 5 are cross-sectional views of the bodywork shown in FIG. 1, showing the position of the mechanical transformation components, inside the bodywork.
Fig. 6 is a view on a larger scale of a detail of FIG. 5.
As shown in the drawings, the balloon 1 of the body, which comprises the windows 2, is independent of the body 3 of the body.
The balloon 1 is articulated in 4 at one end of an arm 5 provided inside the body, which pivots on a support 6 provided at a

Frame fitting 7, extending longitudinally along the inner wall of the body 3. The fitting 7 is fixed on the one hand to the door pillar 8 and on the other hand to the upper wall of a shell or box 9 made of heavy sheet metal, which covers the rear wheel 10 to form, in combination with the outer panel of the body 3 (Figs. 4 and 5), a cavity for the deflections of the wheel 10, allowing thus the integration of the wing in the body.
At the rear lower end of the balloon 1 are supported rollers 11 engaged in the groove 12 of parallel rails 13, inclined towards the rear of the bodywork and which extend along the side walls of the box 14 formed in the body 3 of the vehicle.
When the body is closed (position of the elements shown in Fig. 1), the lower edge of the front end 15 of the balloon 1 rests, in a sealed manner, on the upper cross member 16 of the frame of the barrier. Breeze This crosspiece is provided with a guide 17, intended to penetrate into a notch 18, formed in the lower edge of the end 15 of the balloon, while any attachment means are provided to the crossbar 16 and to the balloon 1 , to lock the latter in the closed position. In this position, the lower sides of the rear part of the balloon 1 come to rest, by their edges 19, in a gutter 20 formed in the upper edge of the body 3.
In order to allow the engagement of said edges 19 of the balloon 1 in the channel formed by the gutter 20 of the body 3, when closing the bodywork, as well as the release of the balloon from the channel of the said gutter 20, when the opening of the bodywork, the front end of the rails 13 has a curved part 21, which is articulated at 22 and is controlled in its angular movements by support brackets 23, one end of which is articulated at 24, while that the other end is articulated to a pivot 26 fixed to the housing 9 of the rear wheels.
The safe 14 is provided with a cover 27 articulated to the body 3 by means of a hinge 28. This cover is provided, preferably, with any known means, not shown, for the automatic retention of this cover. in its open or closed positions. Said cover 27 has on the other hand a rim 29 directed downwards, intended to engage in gutters 30, formed, one at the rear end of the balloon 1 and the other along the edges of the box. 14. The bottom of said gutters is lined with an elastic material providing the seal and soundproofing of the j, ointo Channels (not shown), connecting the gutters of the body and opening under the vehicle, are provided for evacuation of water flowing on the body, in the event of rain or during washing.
A compensating spring 31 is articulated, on the one hand, at one end of the arm 5, and on the other hand at a determined fixed point 32 of the body 3 of the vehicle, with a view to assisting the force developed to move ball 1 around pivot 6.
To operate the transformation of the "closed" bodywork into "open" bodywork, one acts as follows: After raising the lid 27 of the trunk 14, the balloon 1 is unhooked from the cross member 16 of the windshield and one or- vre the compasses 23 so as to bring their branches into an extension of one another, with a view to lifting the curved part 21 of the rails 13 and freeing the edges 19 of the balloon 1 from the gutters 20. The balloon 1 is then lifted from the front, to give the arm 5 an angular movement around the pivot 6.
Under the effect of this angular movement, the ball moves backwards, while the rollers 11 roll along rails 13, as shown in Fig.2.
During the first part of this angular movement of the arms 5, the. springs 31 come to help the effort developed to cause this movement, while in the second part of this same angular movement, the said :. springs act to slow the action of gravity on the balloon 1, during its descent along the inclined plane formed by the rails 13. This angular displacement of the balloon 1 is thus effected with minimal force. At the end of the race, the rollers 11 are wedged in hooks 33, to block the ball 1 in the trunk
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
14 (see Fig. 3). The cover 27 is then folded down, giving the body all the neatness of appearance desirable.
In order to return the movable elements of the body to their initial position shown in Fig. 1, we act in the opposite direction to what has just been described, by pulling forward on the balloon 1, the force of which is appreciably reduced by the action of the springs 31 which restore the force stored during the previous operation.
The trunk 14. being of large size, the introduction of the balloon 1 into the latter only slightly reduces the space available for the installation of the luggage and of a spare wheel 34, the luggage being able to travel. Position yourself between this spare wheel and the backrests of the rear seats, which backrests are made to pivot to allow access to this location.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiment described and illustrated in the drawings, but that numerous modifications can be made thereto without departing from the spirit of the invention. Thus, for example, the retraction of the balloon 1, which is controlled manually, could be actuated by a motive force acting either on the arms 5 to control their angular movements, or on the rear end of the balloon with a view to it. drive along the guide rails 13.
