Abstract

755,547. Batteries. ACCUMULATORENFABRIK AKT.-GES. Feb. 12, 1954 [March 6, 1953], No. 4241/54. Class 53. The electrolyte in a sealed accumulator is absorbed in the electrodes and separators, and oxygen liberated at the positive electrode is absorbed by the rear surfaces of the negative electrodes that are not covered by the separators. Fig. 1 shows an accumulator with one positive electrode 2 and two negatives 4 separated by diaphragms 6. A small quantity of free electrolyte 7 may occupy the lower end of the container into which the separators extend. The rear faces of the negative electrodes are separated from the container walls by distance pieces 8 so that oxygen from the positive electrode can penetrate to the rear faces of the negative electrodes and become absorbed. Fig. 2 shows in plan an accumulator having two positive electrodes 2 each of which is associated with two negatives 4 which are separated from the container and from one another by distance pieces 8 to provide spaces 9 into which oxygen can penetrate and become absorbed in the parts of the negative electrodes not covered by the separators. At the moment of closing the cell the positive electrode is in a condition to generate oxygen while negative electrode generates no hydrogen.
