Oxygen evolved from the positive plates of a sealed accumulator is absorbed by allowing it to combine with the active material of the negative plates which are made of greater capacity than the positives. Oxygen evolved from the positives then discharges the negative plates by the same amount as they are charged by the current and they never reach the fully charged state even when the positives are fully charged.
