Abstract

729,383. Supplying fuel by direct injection ; cycles. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 11, 1953 [June 23, 1952], No. 16106/53. Classes 7(2) and 7(3). The invention relates to a method of operating an engine, and to the construction thereof, the engine having an inlet valve 35 which is provided with a semi-circular shroud 35A so that the incoming air is swirled about the cylinder axis, the swirl rate having a substantially constant ratio, such as 6 : 1, to the engine speed. During the compression stroke a small boss 47 on an engine driven cam. 45 operates a fuel valve 42 and causes a pilot fuel injection through a nozzle 40 ; the fuel is entrained in the swirling air and forms a pilot patch which continues to swirl around the cylinder as the piston continues to rise, the cetane number of the fuel being chosen so that the patch ignites by compression as it completes one or more swirls. At this instant the main boss 48 on cam 45 operates the valve 42 so that the first increment of the main fuel injection is ignited by the pilot patch and establishes a flame front which tends to burn towards the injector and consumes the additional combustible mixture that is formed as the main fuel injection continues for a time slightly less than one air swirl. The pilot injection which may be made from a different position to the main jet and has an adjustable duration may commence at any time during the compression stroke ; the main injection may begin at either side of T.D.C. depending on engine load, and it is preferable to throttle the main fuel rather than the air. In a modification, the pilot and main injections are effected through separate nozzles, the main nozzle being above the pilot nozzle and parallel thereto, each nozzle being supplied from a separate fuel system comprising a tank, high-pressure pump an accumulator tank and a check valve ; the pilot fuel may be different from the main fuel and have a high cetane number. After the engine has started the pilot fuel system is shut off and the main fuel is ignited by a glow plug which has been raised to ignition temperature by engine operation. The main fuel may be any combustible fluid such as natural gas, gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel or heavier hydrocarbons. The engine may operate on a two or four stroke Otto cycle. Specification 596,846 is referred to.
