Abstract
693,686. Centrifugal compressors. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENTS), Ltd. April 25, 1951 [Jan. 25, 1950], No. 1952/50. Class 110(i) In a compressor, the peripheral surface of the rotor 1 is a hyperboloid of revolution of one sheet, and the roots of the radially extending rotor blades 2 lie along straight line generators of the hyperboloid, the inter-blade flow passages being first convergent and then divergent. The rotor diameter may be the same at inlet and outlet. The relative flow velocity at inlet may be supersonic, and the leading edges of the blades may be swept back as at S. In addition, the trailing edges may be swept back as at R, and the blade height may be reduced as at Q and P. The rotor may comprise a number of axially disposed sections. The blades may be integral with each section or may be inserted into grooves. The blades of each section may be staggered in relation to those of adjacent sections. On leaving the rotor, the fluid may pass by way of an annular diffuser to aerofoil stator blades which remove the whirl. Alternatively, the diffuser described in Specification 693,727 may be used. If the rotor is wholly or partly shrouded, the shrouding and the rotor surface may both be extended at the exit end to provide a bladeless rotary diffuser ahead of the stationary diffuser.
