636,290. Centrifugal and axial-flow compressors. LYSHOLM, A. Jan. 7, 1948, No. 553. Convention date, Jan. 9, 1947. [Class 110(i)] A diffuser for 'a centrifugal compressor has guide vanes with inlet edges located obliquely to the direction of flow, followed by guide vanes having inlet edges at right angles to the direction of flow. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the inlet edge 6 of an impeller blade 5 is inclined, with respect to the direction of flow, at 45 degrees over a portion 6a, at 50 degrees over a portion 6b, and at 90 degrees at the inner end of a curved portion 6c. A diffuser guide vane 7 is inclined at 45 degrees to the direction of flow. The inclined guide vane may be of chevron shape, Fig. 1 (not shown), and may be of adjustable pitch. In a multi-stage embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the inclined guide vane is located in the axially extending portion of an interstage diffuser. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an axial-flow compressor, Fig. 7 (Cancelled), in which the inlet edges of rotor blades 26, 28 and stator blades 27 have their radially outer portions arranged obliquely to the direction of flow, while the inner portions are arranged substantially at right angles to the direction of flow. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
