Abstract
675,369. Treating liquids in a magnetic field. VERMEIREN, T. I. S. Dec. 21, 1949 [Dec. 24, 1948; Dec. 6, 1949] , Nos. 32704/49 and 32705/49. Classes 49. [Also in Groups I, XVIII and XXXV] Sugar juices, milk, or the like, are treated in a device provided with means for producing a magnetic field and a passage for the liquid to be treated comprising a number of magnetic elements, the passage being arranged in such a way that the lines of liquid flow cut successively in a substantially perpendicular manner the lines of force of the magnetic fields corresponding to the magnetic elements. In one form a pipe 1, Fig. 1, along which the water or other liquid passes in the direction 7 is arranged along the common axis of four solenoids 4 having like poles adjacent and has supported within it by members 3, Fig. 2, made from non- magnetic material a rod 2 of high magnetic permeability. The nature of the resulting magnetic field is indicated by lines of force 8, those in adjacent planes being opposite in sense. The solenoids 4 are energised by either alternating or direct current. They may be replaced by ring-shaped permanent magnets which alternatively may be arranged within the pipe 1. The poles are located at the ends of the rings in planes perpendicular to the ring axes, like poles being adjacent as before. In Fig. 6 numbers of permanent bar magnets 4 are arranged in columns the members of each column interlocking and having similar like poles adjacent. Each pole of each magnet in one column is opposite a pole of opposite sign in adjacent columns. The poles are disposed along the longer edges of the bars. Lines of force are shown at 8 and lines of liquid flow at 7. Where interlocking means are not provided the bars are supported by vertically-grooved end-plates. In Figs. 9 and 10 each magnet comprises a bar 10 of arcuate section, four such bars constituting a pipe-like structure. The poles are again disposed along the longer edges of the bars and like poles are adjacent. The liquid is made to flow, along a pipe 1 disposed within the magnets 10, in a helicoidal path by an Archimedean screw having an axis 12 of high magnetic permeability. The magnets are supported by rings 14. Lines of force are shown at 15, Fig. 10. Alternatively the pipe 1 may be outside the magnets, these members all being supported in grooved circular end plates which also have flanged central holes for the passage of the liquid. It is stated that the treated liquids do not give rise to calcareous or other incrustations and are effective in dislodging such deposits from encrusted apparatus.
