Abstract

627,746. Velocity-modulated tubes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Feb. 7, 1947, No. 3636. Convention date, March 6, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group' XL (c)] An ultra-high-frequency generator is enclosed within a first chamber, and an antenna is enclosed within a second chamber, one wall of which constitutes a reflector, the two chambers being evacuated and communicating via a conductive tubular element which is adapted to transmit ultra-high-frequency energy. In Fig. 1, a velocity-modulated ultra-high-frequency generator comprises a cathode 18, two hollow resonators 20 and a collector electrode 19. The output is taken from loop 11 and applied to antenna 12. An enclosure formed by parabolic reflecting mirror 13 and cover 14, which is transparent to radio waves, encloses antenna 12, the mirror also being sealed to the generator portion in spaced relation to the tubular portion 15 of the antenna structure, by nipple 16. The common enclosure of generating, propagating and reflecting means is evacuated to facilitate insulation requirements.
