Abstract

571,485. Fuel-injection pumps. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 16, 1943, No. 15232. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1942. [Class 7 (iii)]. [Also in Group XXVIII] In a fuel-injection pump, pilot and main - injections are terminated by two byepassing operations effected independently by separate ports 42, 43 in the cylinder 37 and passages 45, 60 in the plunger 44. The pump is cooled by fuel continuously circulated by means of supply passages 41 and an annular chamber 40 feeding the inlet port 39, and the plunger 44 is angularly adjusted by a gear sleeve 48. The passage 60 is connected to an axial groove 59 which co-operates with a port 58a connected by a passage 58 in communication with the pressure chamber of the pump. The lower edge of the groove 59 and the edges of passage 60 may be helical. In a modification, the passage 60 is in continuous communication with the pressure chamber of the pump by an extension of radial passage 47 communicating with the groove 59, or by an extension of the axial passage 46 communicating with the passage 60. The pump may be constructed as a unit with an injection valve 27 and nozzle 21. As shown, the pressure chamber of the pump is connected by passages 35, 36, 29 to an injector pressure chamber 28 with a conical seat 26b for the tapered lower end of needle valve 27. The latter is normally held in its closed position by a spring 30, spindle 31, and a pin 27a. Fuel leaking past the valve 27 escapes through passage 61 to the chamber 40.
