Abstract
617,434. Fuel-injection pumps. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 25, 1946, No. 22146. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1945. [Class 102 (i)] A fuel-injection pump comprises a cylinder 1 provided with a plunger 5 reciprocable in a bore 3, a pumping space 14, an annular filter element 15, and a check valve 21 held on its seat 11 by a spring 23 located between the valve and a spray nozzle 7. The plunger 5 is formed with a pressure relief groove 51 communicating with a slot 55, such that on its working stroke the plunger first closes the fuel inlet port 27 by the edge 53, then closes the drain port 29 by the inclined edge 56 of the slot 55 and at the end of the injection simultaneously opens both ports by the circumferential edge 57 of the groove 51, which causes a relief of pressure in the pumping space 14 through the ports 27 and 29, thereby allowing the quick re-seating of the check valve 21 to prevent any dribbling of fuel through the spray opening 25 in the nozzle 7. A spring 31 which returns the plunger 5 on its filling stroke, is retained and supported on a flange 37 of a plunger control sleeve 39 slidably mounted on the plunger. A control arm 47 integral with the flange 37 is adapted to rotate the plunger by manual control means or a governor to vary the amount of fuel injected by the pump.
