Abstract

539,422. Electron oscillators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and FREMLIN, J. H. Feb. 6, 1940, No. 2297. [Class 39 (i)] An electron beam is concentrated in a discharge device such as the velocity modulated oscillator described in Specification 537,490-by a magnetic field the lines of which converge from a large surface cathode C in the direction of travel of the beam. As shown an accelerating grid G is used with resonators Rl, R2. The field may diverge at a point beyond the second resonator ; axial permanent magnets or axial coils may be used to increase the first convergence and the subsequent divergence. The pole of the magnet behind the cathode may be annular and a small permanent magnet inserted in the opening. With a flat beam slotted poles may be used.
