Abstract

535,717. Folding paper; sheet associating apparatus. QUICK. C. G., and WHITEHEAD, W. A. Nov. 9, 1939, No. 29768. [Class 100 (i)] A rotary folding machine in which blades 2 can fold uncollected sheets into rollers 3, 4 for newspaper work, or can fold collected sheets which are associated on pins 17 for magazine work is constructed so that the setting of the mechanism for actuating the blades 2 correctly automatically operates the mechanism for releasing the impaling pins 17 at the required times. To adjust the operation of each folding blade 2, which is a radial blade only, an adjustable cam plate 9, Fig. 3, is fitted to the folding machine and a cam surface 11 engages one of the rollers 7 on the arm 6 of the folding blade 2 and rotates this arm through 180 degrees when the blade is passing the rollers 3, 4. The cam 11 has tracks 12, 13 concentric to the cam-track 8 which keeps the arm 6 tangential to the folding cylinder. Since the cam 11 rotates the blade shaft for half a revolution, the blade operates once in two revolutions and thus folds two sheets collected on the pins 17. A second cam plate having two cams similar to the cam 11 can be substituted for the cam plate 9 and in this case the blade is given two half revolutions and thus operates to effect a fold once in each revolution of its cylinder. The operation of the pins 17 is controlled by a cam 18 which tends to withdraw the pins 17 against the action of a spring 26 each time the following blade passes the rollers 3, 4. When the blades are set to fold once in two revolutions only the position of the preceding folding blade prevents withdrawal of one set of pins owing to the engagement of a lever arm 19 on the shaft which operates the pins with a projection on one side of the folding blade 6 of the preceding blade.
