Abstract

389,880. Firelighters. SWAINE, P., 140, North Marine Road, Scarborough. Sept. 30, 1931, No. 27282. [Class 50.] Firelighters are made of wood or other combustible materials in the shape of an openended arch or inverted trough having a flat roof 1 to support the fuel and having slots or perforations 5, 4, in the roof and sides. Slots 6 are also provided along the lower edge of the sides to which perforated paper 7 or a wick may be attached for igniting purposes; or an igniting wad may be placed under the arch. The firelighter may be built up of successive layers of paper or cardboard, paste, sugar solution, binding material or size, coal dust, rope, rags, sawdust, shavings, chips, coke dust or charcoal, a further paper layer and so on ; or the materials may be pulped and moulded. Or the firelighter may be made of layers of plywood cemented together or of wicker, reeds, rags, ropes &c. plaited together. Staples or stitching may be used to preserve the shape. To accelerate combustion the firelighter may be impregnated with saltpetre, alcohol, naphthalene, creosote wax, resin, sugar, amyl-acetate, &c. Tongues 3 which may also be formed in the roof may extend into the space between the walls.
