Abstract
A photo booth (1) providing e-mail/internet links (15) at scenic attractions includes a microphone (10, 11) and a digital camera (4) fixed in a cubicle at a predetermined orientation with respect to the scenic attraction (viewed trough a window (2)) to provide an image of that attraction that can be sent via e-mail (or the internet) (15) accompanied with a sound recording/voice message. Text messages may also be superimposed on the image.
Description
1 2356309 INFORMATION TRANSMITTER This invention relates to an information
transmitter. More especially but not exclusively the 'invention relates to a transmitter for transmitting sounds 5 and images.
It is of course well known to obtain momentoes of visits to places. Examples include pictures whether still or moving and postcards. The invention seeks to provide improved means and methods for doing so. 10 According to the invention there is provided a method of providing a message comprising i providing a camera having at least one tourist attraction within the 15 field of view, ii providing a microphone iii providing means for transferring value iv transfer of value thereby actuating the camera and the microphone, v recording a message including an image of the tourist aWaction vi electronically transmitting the message to a remote location.
2- According to the invention there is finther provided Apparatus for recording a message the apparatus comprising 5 a a cubicle having at least one aperture or window formed therem' b a camera having an aperture of the cubicle within its field of view c a microphone d means for recording a message comprising an image from the camera and sound from the microphone. e means for transmitting electronically the message to a remote location and f means for transferring value.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by reference to the accompanying figure which is a schematic view of the invention.
The embodiment of the figure comprises a cubicle 1. Desirably, for 20 reasons which will become apparent hereafter at least a part of cubicle I is transparent. This can be achieved by providing one or more windows 2 and/or by having an opening 3 formed in the cubicle 1.
It is not however essential that a cubicle be present. It is within the ambit 5 of the invention to simply site the equipment within sight of a tourist attraction.
Camera 4 is provided. Camera 4 may record still and/or moving pictures. In preferred embodiments of the invention camera, 4 will record an image in digital form. An example of a way in which his could be done s using a charge coupled device. This is not essential and other ways of recording an image such as chemically may be used.
Desirably camera 4 is positioned such that windows and/or apertures are 15 within the field of view. In some embodiments of the invention indicia 5 are provided within the field of view of the camera.
Irrespective of the means for forming an image a representations of the image will be formed. In the case of digital image representations the image representation may be compressed for example in known way. In the illustrated embodiment means for storing the image representation are J+ provided. Suitable means will depend on the form in which the image representation takes. In the case of digital representations the image representation is conveniently stored in random access memory for example on a hard drive, on CD-R or on semiconductor chips.
Means for the local display of the image can be provided. In the illustrated embodiment this comprises a printer 7 and a screen 6. Screen 6 can employ a cathode ray tube or LCDs.
Means for providing a local copy of the image representation may be provided. In the illustrated embodiment this comprises a printer 7 on which can be printed the image. Those skilled will be able to devise other methods for example providing a floppy disc or CID.
At least some embodiments of the invention are provided with at least one microphone 10. Some embodiments provide a first microphone 10 situated within the cubicle and a second microphone I I provided outside the cubicle. The first microphone detects sounds from within the cubicle,, for example the voice of a user. The second microphone detects sounds from 20 outside the cubicle.
Means 12 for recording a representation of the sounds is provided. In preferred embodiments of the invention this is in digital form, optionally compressed. The sound and image representations may be combined in a single, optionally compressed, file. Thos skilled will be able to devise 5 other ways of recording the sound for example using magnetic tape.
Means 13 for local playback of the sound file can be provided. This can comprise a loudspeaker, floppy disk or CD.
Means for transferring value 14 are generally provided. Those skilled will have little difficulty in devising suitable means for transferring value. Examples include coin freed apparatus and card readers.
Means 15 for transmitting the sound and/or image data to a remote location are provided. A convenient way of achieving this is to provide a link to the world wide web. Means 15 will therefore generally comprise a computer and a modem. It will be apparent to the skilled that any of a wide range of telecommunications apparatus will be suitable for this including ISDN,, mobile phone based networks and conventional land lines. In some embodiments of the invention the system will be arranged to transmit the data at a future time thereby reducing telephone line charges. A keyboard 6 will generally be provided to allow the system to be actuated. The computer can control the other features of the invention and thus for exwnple can be used to convert and store the image and sound representations.
An example of use of the invention will now be described. The cubicle is positioned within sight of a tourist attraction. The apertures are positioned so that the tourist attraction is within the field of view of the camera. The indicia may comprise words such as "Greetings from [name of the attraction]. The microphone situated outside the cubicle picks up ambient sound for example the sound of bells chiming or surf breaking (depending on location) while the microphone situated within the cubicle allows the userl)s voice to be recorded.
The user actuates the apparatus by means of the value transfer means and may record a message. The user may position himself within the field of view of the camera.
Once the message is recorded it may, optionally, be edited for example by using software resident on the computer. A local copy may be obtained. The user can then send electronically a copy of the message to the desired electronic address. The addressee can then download the message as a personalised electronic postcard.
In some embodiments of the invention the camera is controlled for 5 example by software control to initial provide a close-up view of the user and then pan or zoom out to include a view of the attraction. Some embodiments of the invention operate in the reverse of this with an initial view of the attraction and then a pan or zoom to show the user more closely.
In some embodiments of the invention in addition to the sound and/or images recorded by the user one or more standard files such as pre-shot footage of the attraction or advertisements are transmitted.
Those sIdlled will have no difficulty in devising modifications.
