Thermionic amplifiers.-Valve receivers of the reaction type are provided with means for neutralizing the distortion caused by the high selectivity or low damping of the receiving circuit. The back-coupled rectifying valve V has in its plate circuit a combination of resistance R, and inductance L1, both shunted by a by-pass condenser C1 and the audio-frequency voltage across the combination is applied to the grid of an audio-amplifier V1. If R be the effective resistance remaining in the receiving-circuit L C after taking account of the negative resistance introduced by the back-coupling, then exact compensation for distortion is produced by making the ratio of R1 to L1 half that of R to L. For supersonic reception employing two or more stages of selection and rectification. the compensation may be effected after each stage of rectification.
