Abstract

The piston-type container cover made in a strong, durable material e.g., plastic is designed so the outer cover 10 fits over the outside of a part-filled container e.g., tin of beans, the flexible rubber seal 12 being in contact with the outside of the container to be covered, while the centre piston 11 displaces the bacteria-holding air inside the container thereby extending the shelf life and reducing odours from the container's contents. The outside cover 10 is detachable from the centre piston 11 at 13 by turning and pulling the finger-grip at 15 which is centrally positioned on flat base of inverted piston 11. <IMAGE>

Description

THE PISTON - TYPE CONTAINER COVER This invention relates to a piston-type container cover.
The conventional type of container cover that is employed say, to cover a partly-filled container e.g., tin of beans is normally made of a flexible plastic and is of a flat rimmed-lid design. When fixed in position, bacteria-holding air is trapped between the under side of the lid and the surface of the containers contents allowing mould to form.
According to the present invention there is provided a pistontype container cover constructed in a durable material e.g., plastic, comprising of an open-based cylindrical cover that supports a cylindrical inverted piston. The outer cover has a flexible rubber seal around the inside perimeter adjacent to the base. As the outer cover is pushed over the outside of a container the inner piston will slide into the container thereby displacing the air. The inner piston is releasably secured to the inside top centre of the outer cover for cleaning purposes.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective a vertical cross-section of the piston-type container cover; Figure 2 shows in perspective the centre cylindrical piston detached from the outer cover.
Referring to the drawing the piston-type container cover made of a durable material e.g., plastic, comprises of a cylindrical outer cover 10 with open base. From inside and releasably secured to the inside top-centre section of 10 the inner inverted cylindrical piston ii protrudes down. There is a gap 1d between the walls of the inner piston ii and outer cover 10 allowing the container to enter.
The outer cover 10 which has a flexible rubber seal 12 around the inside perimeter adjacent to the base, is pushed over the container to be covered. Simultaneously, the inner piston 11 slides into the container replacing most of the air. The container being covered slides into the space between inner and outer sections 14.
To remove the piston-type container cover, grip base of container being covered with one hand and outer cover 10 with the other and pull to separate.
The inner cylindrical piston 11 can be detached from outer cover 10 at 15 by turning and pulling finger-grip 15 which is centrally positioned on flat base of inverted piston 11 for cleaning purposes.

Claims (4)

1 The piston-type container cover is made of a strong, durable material e.g., plastic and is designed to fit over and into a part-filled container e.g., tin of beans, thereby limiting the amount of air coming in contact with the containers contents.
2 The piston-type container cover as claimed in Claim 1 by limiting the amount of air in contact with the containers contents will prolong the shelf life of the contents.
3 The piston-type container cover as claimed in Claims 1 and 2 by limiting the amount of air in contact with the containers contents and extending the shelf life, odours will be reduced.
4 The piston-type container cover being much larger than the conventional flat-lid type cover will be easier to handle.
