Abstract

A remote control locking system wherein the key comprises a keypad (10) for entering numeric information, a memory storing data relating to a cipher algorithm and means for generating and transmitting, as by infrared radio, a coded pattern of data developed from entered information and the cipher, and the lock has a receiver (18) which identifies the cipher and decodes the coded pattern of data transmitted to it in order to operate the lock. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Remote control locking system Field of the invention This invention relates to a remote control locking system, wherein a key is operable to transmit information to a remote lock, as by infra-red radio for example, and the lock incorporates a receiver which interprets and verifies the transmitted information and an electromechanical means which operates the lock if the received information is verified.
Background to the invention An inherent weakness in security in a simple system such as that outlined above is that the data transmission to the lock is liable to be monitored and regenerated for illegal use at a later time.
Object of the invention It is an object of this invention to provide a remote control locking system which minimises or avoids the inherent weakness referred to.
The invention According to the invention, a remote control locking system comprises a key having a keypad for entering numeric information, a memory for storage of data relating to a cipher algorithm, means responsive to the entered numeric information and to the stored data for generating a coded pattern of data which incorporates the numeric information, and a transmitter for transmitting the coded pattern of data, the system also comprising a lock having a receiver, a memory for storage of information relating to the cipher algorithm, means responsive to the received pattern of data and to the stored information for decoding said pattern of data to extract and verify the numeric information therein, and electromechanical means for lock operation operable responsively to the verified numeric information.
The result of the cipher system is that the transmitted pattern of data varies each time the numeric information for operating the lock is entered, thus affording security protection against monitoring of the transmission. The lock has information stored therein enabling it at each transmission to know the code which has been used in accordance with the cipher algorithm. This is made possible either by incorporating a synchronisation sequence in the transmitted pattern or data or by use of a self-synchronising cipher system.
If desired, in addition to the numeric information entered by way of the keypad, the key may act to code such numeric information in conjunction with a count generated by a counter internal to the key, and/or with data and/or time information obtained from a clock internal to the key. Similarly, to enable code recognition and identification, the lock may in dude a counter and/or a clock.
A separate and unique counter can be associated with each of a plurality of keys which are to control the lock.
In a development of the control system, the key and the lock each include both a transmitter and a receiver. Encryption is employed, as before, to protect the numeric information being transmitted; however, the bi-directional nature of the modified control system can provide increased security by enabling use of more complex authentification algorithms and/or can provide more facilities by utilising the capability of the lock to interrogate the key.
Description of drawing The accompanying drawing diagrammatically illustrates a remote control locking system in accordance with the invention.
Description of embodiment Referring to the drawing, the reference 10 denotes a key embodied as a transmitter module incorporating a keypad 12. An "Enter" button 14 switches the device on in preparation for data transmission, conveniently by infra-red radio.
A lock incorporated in a door 16 incorporates an infra-red data receiver 18.
Numeric information for operating the lock is entered via the keypad 12. The key incorporates circuitry including a memory storing a cipher algorithm for encoding the numeric information and generating a pattern of data which differently incorporates the numeric information each time the information is entered via the keypad, in accordance with the cipher algorithm. The pattern of coded data is transmitted to the lock.
The lock incorporates circuitry also including a memory with information stored therein and relating to the cipher algorithm to enable the pattern of data to be decoded and the numeric information content verified. An electromechanical device for operating (opening or closing) the lock will be operated only if the transmitted pattern of data is correctly decoded and the numeric information content correctly verified. Correct decoding can be ensured by using a self-synchronising cipher system or by incorporating a synchronisation sequence in the transmission. A counter and/or clock incorporated both in the key and in the lock can be utilised in the generation of such a synchronisation sequence.
In a modification, both the key and the lock include both a transmitter and a receiver, enabling still higher security to be achieved by virtue of bi-directional communication.
