Abstract

Compositions which may be sprayed onto a transparent material such as glass, comprise a transparent settable resin, a solvent permitting the resin to be applied to the transparent material in a liquid state and which thereafter evaporates to allow the resin to set, and a particulate solid such as silica powder which becomes set within the resin matrix when the solvent has evaporated and allows light to become diffused when it impinges thereon.

Description

SPECIFICATION Diffusion compound This invention relates to a diffusion resin which can be applied to a transparent surface such as glass.
It is known to provide for diffusion through, and diffusive reflection of light from, otherwise transparent materials such as glass by etching one surface of the glas to give a matt or satin effect. Varying degrees of diffusion can be achieved by varying the extent of etching.
It will be apparent that a known method of introducing the property of diffusion in transparent materials as described above has the disadvantage in that such procedure is relatively complicated, time consuming and expensive. It must inevitably be of a permanent nature with the further disadvantage that in order or vary the level of diffusion it is necessary to exchange e.g. a pane of glass with another having different translucent and hence diffusive properties.
It is an object of the present invention to provide means for introducing translucency and hence diffusion to an otherwise transparent material such as glass and in which the aforementioned disadvantages may be overcome.
According to the invention there is provided a compound suitable for applying to the surface of an otherwise transparent material such that light is diffused, the compound comprising a substantially transparent settable resin, a solvent which permits the resin to be applied to the surface of the transparent material in a liquid state and thereafter evaporates to allow the resin to set, and a particulate substantially transparent solid which becomes set within the resin matrix when the solvent has evaporated and allows light to become diffused when it impinges thereon.
Conveniently, the resin may be an alklyd or an acrylic resin or a mixture of both resins. The solvent may conveniently be chosen from one or a mixture of aromatic solvents, glycol ether solvents or chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents. The particulate solid may conveniently be silica powder.
The means for applying the compound liquid of the present invention may conveniently comprise an aerosol in which the compound becomes atomised and in such case the compound itself may contain an atomising propellant such as fluorocarbon.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to a particular compound which may be applied to the surface of a transparent material such as glass by means of an aerosol spray.
An embodiment of the invention comprises a mixture of an aromatic solvent, alkyd resin, acrylic resin, glycol ether solvent, silica powder (which in this particular example is the substantially transparent particulate substance affording diffusion of light), chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent and fluorocarbon propellant.A typical formula for such a compound is given below: Cbnstituent Percentage by weight "'onatic solvent 13.644 Altyd resin 2.11 Acrylic resin 5.366 Glycol ether solvent 2.4 Silica powder 0.48 Chlonnated Hydrocarbon solvent 41.00 Fluorocarbon propellant 35.00 The compound is stored as a liquid under pressure within an aerosol and can be released to form a spray in a conventional manner by depression of a jet at the top of the aerosol. The fluorocarbon propellant provides the necessary pressure within the aerosol to provide a fine spray of the compound which can be directed onto the surface of a transparent material such as glass. When the compound has become deposited upon the surface of the glass the various solvents referred to then evaporate to leave substantially upon the surface of the glass the silica powder dispersed and set within a matrix of alkyd and acrylic resin. Because of the particulate nature of the silica, light impinging upon the surface becomes diffused resulting in a matt or satin effect finish. The extent of such diffusion can be varied if necessary by depositing subsequent layers of the compound upon the glass.
The compound may be removed if necessary from the glass by a suitable solvent such as chlorinated hydrocarbon.
The present invention may find particular application where it is desirable to permanently or temporarily convert transparent material such as glass into a material having a degree of surface diffusion. For example, the compound may be provided within an aerosol which can then be applied to glazed pictures or photographs in order to provide a softer tonal affect which permits viewing of the picture or photograph but substantially eliminates the direct reflection of light from the glazed surface.
In a similar manner, the compound may be utilised to provide diffusion on the inside surfaces of greenhouses and can also be used at home, in the office, in the factory, shop etc. on glazed surfaces where strong sunlight is undesirable.
