Abstract

Coating compositions comprise resinous film-forming material in particulate and in disolved form, said material in particulate form being present in amount from 2 to 50% by weight of the total composition, having an average particle size of 1 to 1500 microns, having particles which remain substantially the same size and shape in a coating made from said composition and which are substantially transparent in such a coating, said composition being adapted to form a thin coating which is clear, textured, light-scattering, light-reflecting and light-refracting. The particulate resin may be polyvinyl chloride, a vinyl chloride/maleate ester copolymer, polyvinylidene chloride chlorinated rubber or polymethyl methacrylate. The dissolved resin may be a polyacrylate, polymethacrylate, polyester, alkyd, urea-formaldehyde or melamine-formaldehyde resin. The compositions may also comprise plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, diisooctyl adipate, dioctyl sebacate and tricresyl phosphate; diluents, e.g. toluene, naphtha and diisobutyl ketone; and stabilizers. The compositions may be used to form textured coatings on wood, cloth, plastic and metal, which may have been treated with an adhesion promoting primer and a pattern or colour coat. Examples describe compositions, for producing textured top coats, comprising (III) polyvinyl chloride, a sebacic polyester plasticizer, barium/cadmium stabilizer, zinc stabilizer, epoxidized soya bean oil and toluene; (IV) methyl methacrylate/butyl methacrylate copolymer, vinyl chloride/maleate ester copolymer, castor oil modified polyester resin, an azelaic polyester plasticizer, epoxidized soya bean oil, barium/cadmium stabilizer and toluene; (V) polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl chloride, an azelaic polyester plasticizer, epoxidized soya bean oil, cadmium/barium stabilizer and toluene; (VI) chlorinated rubber, chinawood oil/soya oil modified phthalic alkyd resin and mineral spirits; and (VII) polymethyl methacrylate, an azelaic polyester plasticizer, epoxidized soya bean oil, barium/cadmium stabilizer and toluene.ALSO:Substrates may be coated with compositions comprising solvent, resinous film forming material in particulate form and resinous material in dissolved form, said material in particulate form constituting 2 to 50 weight per cent of the composition, having a particle size of 100 to 250 microns and being substantialy transparent in the resulting coating, said composiion being adapted to form a thin coating which is clear, textured light-scattering, light-reflecting and light-refractng. The substrate may be wood, cloth, plastic or metal, and may have been pretreated with a printed design or colour coat and/or an adhesion promoting primer. The coatings may be applied by spraying, dipping or roller coating, and may be air dried or baked. The particulate polymer may be a polymer of one or more ethylenically unsaturated compounds or chlorinated rubber, and the dissolved resin may be an acrylic, polyester, alkyd or aminoplast resin. Examples describe (I) a primer composition of urea/formaldehyde resin, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/maleic acid terpolymer, epoxidised soya bean oil, dioctyl phthalate, pigments, aluminium stearate, talc, phosphoric acid and methyl isobutyl ketone; (II) a colour coating comprising vinyl chloride polymer, dioctyl phthalate, a sebacic acid polyester plasticiser and pigments; and the coating of (VIII) phosphated steel panels, and (XII) phenol/formaldehyde resin articles and glass fibre reinforced polyester sheets with primer (I), colour coat (II) and top coats (III) comprising polyvinyl chloride, sebacic polyester, barium/cadmium/zinc stabilizer, epoxidised soya bean oil and toluene; the coating of (IX) polymethyl methacrylate sheets with primer (I), colour coat (II) and a top coat comprising (IV) a vinyl chloride/maleic ester copolymer, a butyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer, castor oil modified polyester resin, an azelaic polyester resin, epoxidized soya bean oil, barum/cadmium stabilizer and toluene; the coating of (XI) wood, chipboard, hardboard and plasterboard with primer (I), colour coat (II) and top coats comprising chlorinated rubber, chinawood oil/soya oil modified phthalic alkyd resin and mineral spirits; and the coating of (X) aluminium die castings with primer (I) and a top coat comprising polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, azelaic polyester, epoxidised soya bean oil, barium/cadmium stabilizer and toluene.
