Abstract

13,666. Levy, A. June 27. Removing metal by.-Nickel or other metallic coatings such as gold or silver are removed without injuring the underlying metal by treating the articles as anodes in an electrolyte composed of sulphuric acid of 48-52‹ BÚ. or of monohydrated nitric acid (HNO3). In the former case, the articles may be of iron, steel, copper, brass, lead, &c. and the cathode of iron, aluminium or lead, while in the latter the articles are of iron or steel and the cathode of iron or aluminium. A small quantity of lead acetate may be added to the electrolyte to eliminate hydrochloric acid. The current may be direct, alternating, or periodically reversed.
