Abstract

1508798 Silicon nitride impregnated with cordierite UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 28 Aug 1975 [10 Sept 1974] 39510/74 Heading C1J [Also in Division C7] A porous Si 3 N 4 body has its pores at least partially filled with a refractory comprising cordierite The cordierite may be introduced by impregnating the Si 3 N 4 with MgO and Al 2 O 3 by immer sion in aqueous solutions of Mg(NO 3 ) and Al- (NO 3 ) 2 and firing to decompose the nitrates. The impregnated Si 3 N 4 is then heated in air above 1000‹C to partially oxidize the Si 3 N 4 and finally fired in a non oxidizing atmosphere e.g. at 1300-1380‹C or 1400-1500‹C in nitrogen when silicon oxynitride is formed. The cordierite content is preferably 10-15% by wt. based on the Si 3 N 4 and 1-2% of the oxides of Li, Ca, Mn and Y may also be present.
