Abstract

1499322 Starting internal combustion engiries LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 17 Feb 1975 [19 Feb 1974] 7476/74 Heading H2H A vehicle starting system comprises a solenoid 21 for moving a starter pinion into engagement with a toothed wheel on the vehicle engine, a starter motor 51 for driving the pinion, an ignition and starter switch 13, means operable when a starter contact 15 of the switch is energized for energizing the solenoid and subsequently energizing the starter motor after a delay, and an inhibiting network operable when the starter motor is energized to prevent reenergization of both the starter motor and the solenoid until an ignition contact 14 of the switch has been deenergized. When the switch 13 is moved to energize both the contacts 14, 15, a transistor 17 is switched on to energize a relay 18 and close a contact 19 which enables the energization of the solenoid 21 for moving the starter pinion. A capacitor 24 is charged via a diode 16 and a resistor 23 and after a delay switches on a transistor 28 to energize a relay 31 which closes its contact 32. A relay 33 is therefore energized and closes its contacts 33a to drive the starter motor 51. The closure of the contact 32 also switches on transistors 36, 37, 44 of the inhibiting network thereby discharging the capacitor 24 through the transistor 44. If the switch 13 is returned to the ignition position, the relays 18, 31 are de-energized but the transistor 44 remains conductive so that movement of the switch to the start position does not enable the charging of the capacitor 24 or the conduction of the transistor 17. Neither the starter motor 51 nor the solenoid 21 can be energized until the switch 13 has been moved to its off position.
