Abstract
1497544 Sensing light beam deviation BALFOUR BEATTY Ltd 5 Sept 1975 [7 June 1974] 25500/74 Heading G1A [ Also in Division E1] A method of steering a tunnelling-shield along a predetermined path comprises directing a laser beam along, or in a direction parallel to or at a fixed angle with, the axis of the predetermined path of the tunnelling shield; focusing the beam on to the imput end of a group of optical guides carried by the shield, the imput ends of the optical guides being arranged in an array in which the position of the input end of each optical guide relative to that of another is fixed, and displaying light transmitted through the optical guides on to a screen at which the output ends of the optical guides are so arranged as to facilitate ready determination of any correction required to be applied to the motion of the shield. The output ends of the optical guides at the screen may be arranged either to identify a particular propulsion ram or rams to be and/or not to be operated or to form a magnification of the array of the input ends. Roll of the shield about its axis is compensated for by an extensible periscope assembly 24 pivotally mounted on the inlet end of a lens assembly 23 for movement about the axis of the lens assembly. Off-line and off-level deviation of the tunnelling shield is detected by rotating a pair of wedge prisms 27 about the axis of the lens assembly so that the laser beam, which is parallel to the predetermined path but displaced from its correct axis, is interrupted at intervals by the rotating prisms and is deflected on to phototransistors 26 lying in three concentric circles on a diaphragm 25. A comparator circuit associated with the photo-transistors of each circle amplifies and compares the voltage imputs from the phototransistors on opposite sides of the diaphragm and the net output is fed to the associated indicating instrument. In another embodiment the diaphragm carries a plurality of optical guides in concentric circles which are connected through phototransistors to bridge circuits feeding associated indicating instruments.
