Abstract
1373645 Interferometers RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 11 May 1972 [12 May 1971] 14473/71 Heading G2J In optical alignment apparatus a laser 12 is mounted separately from an interferometric system 14, 15. In one embodiment misalignment of the laser beam and the system 14 is adjusted at 18 by a pair of triangular prisms each arranged to deflect the light through 90 degrees Fig. 4a (not shown) and each prism being rotatable about an axis parallel to the direction of light incident upon it; or is adjusted by relatively movable plano-concave and convex-plano lenses; or is adjusted by a pair of wedge-shaped prisms with adjacent spaces parallel, each prism being rotatable about an axis parallel to the direction of incident light. In a second embodiment the adjustment is effected through a flexible fibre optic 27 connecting the laser output to the system 14. The fibre optic maintains the spatial coherence of the light. The output from the interferometer system may be electrically detected and fed to an indicator 21, to show a fringe count. If desired the photoelectric transducer 19 may be mounted away from the interferometer system to which it is connected by a second flexible fibre optic 32. The laser beam may be focused on to the fibre optic by a lens 28 and a further lens system 29 may be used to couple the fibre optic output on to the interferometer.
