Abstract

1450249 Ink ribbon mechanisms TELETYPE CORP 22 March 1974 [27 March 1973] 12849/74 Heading B6F An ink ribbon mechanism for a line printer, in which one of the ribbon spool spindles 158, 160 is continuously driven by its respective gear trains 205, 277, 281, 279, or 205, 273, 271, includes sensing arms 185, 187 which detect an irregularity 321 adjacent the end of the ribbon 40 to reverse the ribbon feed so that a rack member 293 is moved from its horizontal position (Figs. 4, 7) to engage a gear of the gear train which is currently not driving its associated spindle. Figs. 4-7 (in that order) show how the drive is transferred from spindle 160 to spindle 158. As shown in Fig. 4 a button 321 on the ribbon 40 raises the arm 185 to the phantom position and so removes lobe 304a of the stop 304 from beneath the rack member 293. This permits the over-centring spring 295 to urge the rack member to engage gear 273 (see Fig. 5). As a result gear 273 rotates its mounting plate 243 against the action of spring 249 until complementary surfaces 243b, 245b no longer overlap (see Fig. 6) and gear 271 no longer engages gear 199 to transmit the drive to spindle 160. Further movement of the rack member 293 by gear 273 from the Fig. 6 position causes the spring 295 to rapidly move the member 293 and lever 291 to the Fig. 7 position in which the drive to the spindle 158 is effected and the rack member 293 rests on stop 302. Stop 302 will subsequently be moved by the sensing arm 187 detecting a button on the ribbon 40 so causing another reversal of the ribbon feed during which reversal the spring 295 completes one revolution to return to the Fig. 4 position.
