Abstract

1441277 Catalytic production of methane from methanol DAVY POWERGAS Ltd 14 June 1974 [27 June 1973] 30664/73 Heading C5E In a process for producing methane from methanol, a mixture of steam and methanol is passed over a catalyst which is free from any Group VIII elements in metallic form, and which will catalyse the CO shift reaction, and the products are thereafter methanated. The preferred catalyst for the methanol gasification is an Fe 2 O 3 /Cr 2 O 3 mixture. The molar ratio of steam to methanol in the feed gas lies between 0À2: 1 to 20 : 1, and may be adjusted to control the reaction temperature. The product gases from the methanol gasification are reacted, using a Group VIII metallic catalyst, in a conventional methanation process. An added hydrocarbon feedstock (LPG or naphtha) may be injected into the product gases and pass therewith to the methanation stage. A multistage process may be adopted in which the gasification and methanation sequence is followed by injection of further methanol and additional gasification and methanation steps.
