Abstract
A methane-containing gas is produced by reacting a mixture of hydrocarbons containing predominantly paraffinic hydrocarbons with an average carbon content of 4-10 carbon atoms in the vapour phase with steam over a bed of nickel catalyst at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure, the reactants being heated to a temperature of above 350 DEG C. and such that the bed is maintained at 400-550 DEG C.; two reactions take place the first endothermically producing carbon monoxide and hydrogen which react exothermically to give methane, the latter reaction providing at least part of the reaction heat of the former. Pressures up to 50 atmospheres may be used and the amount of steam added may be 1.5-5 parts by weight per part of hydrocarbon. The catalyst may contain 15% of reduced nickel on alumina. The product may be enriched in methane, after removal of carbon dioxide and water, by reacting carbon monoxide and hydrogen present at 400 DEG C. or lower over a nickel catalyst. Alternatively, the methane content may be decreased by reacting with steam over a nickel catalyst at above 550 DEG C., air or oxygen being introduced to provide the necessary reaction heat by combustion.
