Abstract

1429469 Data transmission; ciphering R HELL 17 July 1962 [19 July 1961] 27507/62 Heading H4P A method for subsequently enabling data receivers in a continuous transmission of enciphered data transmitted in binary coded form, wherein, after periodic time intervals which are short in relation to the entire transmission time, a pre-arranged signal is sent out by the transmitter, the purpose of the signal is not to record a data element in the receivers but to cause a new and hitherto unused section of the cipher running-down period duration to be set both in the transmitter and in the receivers. The setting of a new cipher section in the transmitter and all the receivers may be continuously prepared by local switch clock mechanisms in periodic time intervals, and within these preparation periods the transmitter completes the setting of the new cipher section by transmitting the pre-arranged signal to all the receivers and restarts the cipher pulse production from their new starting position, the transmission of the ciphered data subsequently being continued. Apparatuses employing local time cycle mechanisms and functioning, respectively, as a facsimile and a teleprinter receiver are described with reference to Figs. 1, 2 (not shown). According to an alternative method described with reference to a teleprinter receiver (Fig. 3, not shown) the transmitter briefly interrupts the transmission of ciphered data and by transmitting a pre-arranged signal it commutates itself and the receivers participating in the transmission to the clear operational state, and the, by transmitting a specific group of letters in clear text, it effects for itself and for all the receivers including the newly participating one, the commutation to the encoded operational state, the setting of a new cipher section and the restarting of all cipher pulse generators, the transmission of encoded data subsequently being continued.
