Abstract

1424558 Spring balance PITNEY-BOWES Inc 21 Dec 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 59423/73 Heading G1W A spring balance comprises a fixed frame 40, a movable frame 17 carrying a load platform 18, a pair of parallel leaf springs connecting the frames and arranged such that the no-load full-load positions of the movable frame are in a common vertical plane a first adjustable spring 46 for setting the zero, and a second adjustable spring 58 for setting the full load position of the movable frame the second spring 58 being anchorable to the fixed frame at any point along a curve which is such that the consequent spring length and inclination will produce the same biasing force on the movable frame in the mid range position. The leaf springs 20, 22 effectively bend about areas 76, 76, and the fixed frame 40 is inclined at an angle # to the vertical such that at the midrange position the ends 80, 80' of the springs 20, 22 are in the same horizontal planes as the axes 76, 76' (Fig. 3), the no-load and full-load position of the ends 80, 80' being equal distances above and below the mid-range positions. The spring 20, 22 are clamped to the frames 17, 40 by aluminium C shaped clamping bars 92, 92', and movement of frame 17 is clamped at 41. The second spring 58 is anchored to the balance frame by means of a bolt 63 engaging in a slot 66 in an upright 62. Deflection of the movable frame 17 is indicated by means a transparent scale 30 carried on an arm 26 connected to frame 17, and an optical projection system for projecting the scale 30 on to a screen 38. The light beam of the optical system is arranged to pass the scale 30 at the point of intersection of axes 150, 158 (Fig. 6) about which the movable frame effectively pivots as a load is moved side to side and back to front respectively on the platform whereby errors due to load positioning are minimized. The biasing force produced by the spring 58 on the mid-range position may be compensated for by the fabrication of the scale 30.
