Abstract

1414909 Remote starting system for engines JC BUCHER 18 Dec 1973 [21 Dec 1972] 58567/73 Headings F1B and F1K [Also in Division H2] A remote starting system for an engine transistor Q5 and relays K 1 to K4, coupled to a receiver (not shown) to receive an engine start signal therefrom and including means for connecting an electric potential source BAT to an ignition system and to a starter motor (starter SOL) in response to a start signal to thereby energize the ignition system and the starter motor, the energizing circuit also being coupled to a generating device ALT to receive an electric signal therefrom and including means for disconnecting the potential source from the starter motor in response to the electric signal to thereby de-energize the starter motor, a device GAS SOL for feeding fuel to the engine, a protection mechanism coupled to the energizing circuit and to the fuel feed device and including an idle regulator mechanism for sequentially energizing and de-energizing the fuel feed device after the engine has started to thereby regulate the idle speed thereof, the protection mechanism further including, means for disconnecting the potential source from the ignition system if the idle regulator mechanism does not de-energize the fuel feed device to thereby stop the engine and prevent damage thereto. In the preferred embodiment a radio receiver is mounted in a vehicle to receive a coded command signal from a radio transmitter carried by an operator. The receiver and transmitter may be of the type disclosed in USA Specification 3478730. An engine start signal from the receiver of less than 5 seconds duration is coupled through a resistor R13 to the base of the transistor Qs. When the transistor Q5 is turned on the transistor Q12 is also turned on and the relay K1 is energized. When the relay K 1 is energized the proper bias voltage is applied to the biasing input of each of the timing devices U1 to U6 from a bias line 60. The timing device U1 comprises the first stage of a two stage time delay start mechanism which stage is specifically intended to energize a fuel feed device GAS SOL to feed the engine before energizing the starter motor. The fuel feed device GAS SOL preferably is a solenoid operatively connected to the throttle valve of the carburetter of the engine. Timing device U4 comprises the second stage of the start mechanism which stage is specifically intended to energize the starter motor by way of a starter solenoid (STARTER SOL) a short time after the device GAS SOL has been energized. When the switch K2A opens, the fuel feed device GAS SOL is de-energized and when the switch K2B closes the starter motor solenoid STARTER SOL is energized. When the starting function is complete and the engine has been running for a sufficient length of time for the electric generating device ALT associated therewith to generate an output voltage which exceeds the voltage level of a fixed threshold device comprising a Zener diode D9, the diode conducts. When the diode D9 conducts the transistor Q9 is turned on and the transistors Q6, Q2 are sequentially turned off thereby de-energizing the relay K3. A protection mechanism including the timing devices U2, U5, U6 and U3 detects malfunctions and other predetermined events in response to such events deenergizes the starting system and stops the engine. The timing device U3 comprises an engine stop mechanism which stops the engine after remote starting thereof if an operater does not assume proper manual control of the engine within a predetermined period of time. The starting system also includes means Fig. 2 (not shown) for detecting that an operator is preparing to assume control of the engine and de-energizing the system and stopping the engine if the operator does not assume proper manual control of the engine within a predetermined period of time.
