Thus, during to and fro movement of the sweeper over a floor, the or each additional brush 23 is caused to sweep dust or dirt towards the area over which the roller brush 14 passes. The or each brush 23 which may comprise a ring of bristles 23' mounted on a head comprising a convex portion 40 connected to a shaft 29 is drivably connected to an associated ground engaging wheel 24 by a gear arrangement 27. The gear arrangement 27 is formed by an element 31 which is rotatably fixed but axially movable relative to the shaft 29, and by a cooperating element on a shaft 28 fixed to the wheel 24. The gear arrangement 27 is housed in a two-part housing 26 which is pivoted about an axis parallel to the shaft 28 by a U-shaped yoke 41, the yoke 41 itself being pivotably mounted about an axis parallel to the direction of movement of the wheels 24 and acted upon by a leaf spring 48 to allow vertical movement of the wheels 24.
