Abstract
1360901 Correlators RAYTHEON CO 3 Jan 1972 [1 Feb 1971] 175/72 Heading G4A [Also in Division H4] In a sonar system (see Division H4) a replica of the transmitted wave train is cross-correlated digitally with the subsequently received echo signal wave train as follows. Both wave trains pass (in turn) through amplifier 102 and are frequency-translated at 104 to a convenient 3À5 kHz signal which is clipped at 108 and then sampled at a 20 kHz rate at 118 to give a series of single-bit binary samples. At the time of transmission a gate 122 opens and the 1032 samples of the replica wave-train are entered into a 1032 stage shift register 130 which is then switched to act as a recirculating loop memory. The sampler 118 output is entered also into a 1031 stage shift register 136 which is then connected as a recirculating loop memory. The recirculation period of the memory is just less than the interval between samples from 118, so that the register 136 contents can be up-dated by one sample every recirculation period. This, together with the difference in storage capacity of registers 130 and 136, ensures that the contents of one register precess with respect to the contents of the other. The data bits at the two register outputs are compared by a coincidence detector 126 whose binary output is smoothed by integrator 128 to give an amplitude-modulated substantially sinusoidal 3À5 kHz signal in which the amplitude represents the degree of correlation between the two register contents.
