Abstract

1359143 Beverage-making machine ER BRAMAH 22 July 1971 [22 April 1970] 19316/70 Heading A4E Apparatus for making hot coffee or tea comprises a boiler 15 with an overflow 26 for the discharge of heated water to a beverage brewing device (14) Fig.1 (not shown), a supply container 16 with an outlet 30 for the supply of cold water to the boiler 15 and the displacement of hot water from the boiler 15 thereby, and a heater 32 in the boiler 15 and of sufficient capacity to maintain the water in the boiler 15 at least at the desired temperature during inflow of cold water from the container 16. The container 16 is a close sliding fit in the upper part of the boiler 15, resting on supports 20 and constituting a detachable lid for the boiler. The boiler 15 is mounted in a housing (13), Fig.1 (not shown) having a lining 21 of heat-insulating material, such as expanded polyurethane. The lower opening of the outlet 30 is close to the bottom of the boiler 15 so that the flow of water into the boiler 15 may be restricted thereby. The rate of flow of water through the overflow 26 is arranged to be less than that through the outlet 30 by the provision of a restricting spray head 23. A temperature sensor 33 is located in the path of water discharging directly from the outlet 30 or deflected from the bottom of the boiler 15, and a control connected thereto switches the heater 32 on when a predetermined minimum temperature is registered. The heater capacity and the rates of flow are such that the temperature of the water in the boiler 15 may be at least 85‹C for inflow of water at 15‹C from the container 16. A funnel (14), Fig.1 (not shown) containing coffee or tea and a filter paper may be slid into position under the housing (13) along runners 39. A flask is placed under the funnel (14) to receive the beverage. The apparatus may be mounted on a base (11) incorporating an electric hot plate (40) to warm the flask. A second electric hot plate may be mounted on top of a cover 35 for the container 16.
