Abstract

1297601 Hydraulic control system GENERAL SIGNAL CORP 3 May 1971 [14 May 1970] 12786/71 Heading F1P In an hydraulic system for, e.g., the boom of a front end loader, and including a pair of rams 12, 13 controlled by a 4-position distributing valve 16 having a 'float' position F in which it establishes a flow-path between head and rod ends of the ram cylinders, a by-pass valve 17 is actuated to form a second flow-path between the ends of the ram cylinders only when the pressure in the lower ends 12a, 13a of the rams is below a predetermined level and the distributing valve 16 is in the float position, thus preventing excessively fast collapsing of the rams 12, 13 if the float position is selected when a large load 11 is being supported. The distributing valve spool 23 is displaced to the raise R or power down PD positions against a centring spring 26 by fluid-pressure from a low-pressure pump 35 applied to either end of the valve 16 via a pilot valve 33 and lines 42, 43 in response to movement of the latter's spool 44 to the left or right respectively. Further movement of spool 44 to the right increases the pressure in line 43 by closing a small bleed notch 47 in spool 44 and this pressure moves the spool 23 to the F position against a second spring 29. Line 43 is connected, when the pressure in the lower ends 12a, 12b of the rams is below the predetermined level, via a valve 61 to the by-pass valve 17, to act on spool 55 against a spring 58, the increased pressure in line 43 required to move spool 23 to the F position also overcoming spring 58, thus providing a second path between the cylinder ends via notches 57 on spool 55. If the pressure in the lower ends of the rams 12, 13 is excessive, motor 63 moves valve 61 against spring 62 and thus prevents the pressure in line 43 acting on the spool 55. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) bypass valve (17<SP>1</SP>) is directly connected to line 43, movement of the shuttle 55 to the left being resisted by the spring 58 and the pressure of fluid in space 54, which is connected via a spring- loaded shuttle valve (611) located in the bore of the spool 55 either to a drain, or, when the pressure in chamber 52 and applied to the shuttle valve, is sufficiently high to move the latter against its spring, to the chamber 52, in which case movement of the spool 55 is prevented.
