Abstract
1,118,060. Hydraulic jacks; counterbalancing loads. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. 2 Dec., 1966 [11 Jan., 1966], No. 54101/66. Headings B8B and B8J. Means is provided to balance at least a portion of the weight of a machine component (not shown) actuated by a double acting hydraulic jack 10 with,a main cylinder 12, piston 26 and rod 14. The rod 14 has bore 34 opening at its inner end, a stationary ring member 38 engaging the wall of the bore 34 and defining one end of an expansible chamber within the rod bore 34 supplied with pressure fluid through a tube 36, thereby tending to extend the rod 14 relative to the cylinder 12. Normal operation of the jack 10 is provided conventionally by directing fluid under pressure through either port 46 or port 48 to extend or retract the rod 14. The jack 10 is connected between a vehicle and a component to be adjusted and when fluid pressure is directed through the tube 36 from an external source such as an accumulator, sufficient pressure may be introduced into the bore 34 to compensate or offset the weight of the component. Fluid pressure introduced through the port 46 is thus utilized entirely for the manipulation of the net payload upon extension of the jack. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a modification wherein the jack is retracted to manipulate the load. Fig. 3 shows an hydraulic circuit adapted to supply fluid pressure from a conventional accumulator 55 to the expansible chamber within the rod bore 34 (or (34<SP>1</SP>) of the modified embodiment). The accumulator 55 is initially charged in a conventional manner by alternately directing fluid from an hydraulic jack circuit (not shown) to ports 46 and 48. Extension of the rod 14 draws fluid from a reservoir 65 through a check valve 73 into rod bore chamber 34, while reverse movement of the rod 14 directs such fluid back through line 59 and check valve 75 into the accumulator 55 which has a piston 56 and a supply of compressible fluid 57. At a predetermined pressure control valve 63 opens and remains open while the pressure in the accumulator is in the operative range. A safety valve 69 has a spool 77 normally urged to open the valve 69 under the action of a spring 80, but when the engine of the vehicle is running lubricating oil pressure therefrom introduced through a conduit 82 keeps the valve 69 closed.
