Abstract
1284158 Electrodes ZCM CORP 23 July 1970 [4 Aug 1969] 35817/70 Heading A5R [Also in Division H4] A hearing system relies on applying electric pulses to the cochlea, the pulse width varying inversely with the frequency of an audio signal representing sound information and the repetition rate increasing as the amplitude of the audio signal increases. Audio frequency electric signals from a microphone 10 (Fig. 1), after amplification, are applied to three buffer stages 12, 13, 14. Three pulse generators 16, 17, 18 have different thresholds so that soft sounds trigger a single generator, medium sounds trigger two generators and loud sounds trigger three generators. The output pulses are non-coincident. Change in pulse width with frequency is accomplished by inherent operation of the pulse generators 16, 17, 18, the pulse width developed by applying a low frequency sine wave being greater than that developed by a higher frequency sound wave. A stage 24 modulates a R.F. transmitter 26 incorporating an oscillator 28. A coupling transformer 29 has its secondary winding connected to two electrodes 30, in use applied to opposite sides of a person's neck (Fig. 5, not shown). Each electrode may comprise a circular platinum foil (50) Fig. 3 (not shown) forming one end wall of a cylindrical housing (52) and covered with insulation (56). Electrodes for use at microwave frequencies may each comprise an insulated ring (72) Fig. 4 (not shown) and an inner insulated disc, the disc and ring (72) being spaced by two spokes (72). The sheath of a coaxial cable is connected to the ring (72) and the inner conductor is connected to the disc.
