Abstract

[Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] An electro-acoustic system for modulating or demodulating high-frequency waves comprises laminations of electro-strictive or piezoelectric material. The electro-strictive material may be hard rubber coated on its upper and lower surfaces with a thin conductive film. Fig. 2 shows an electro-strictive telephone receiver in which alternate pairs of adjacent coated surfaces are connected by wires 27, 271 and a band-pass filter 30, 31, 32 (to give a voltage step up) through a radio-frequency amplifier 29 to a receiving aerial, no detector being required. The receiver may be associated with a wave-guide transmission system or may be coupled through a tuned circuit comprising condenser 35, Fig. 3, and coil 34 with a hollow electric-wave resonator 33. For modulating a carrier wave, sound waves cause the diaphragm to deform the electro-strictive material, thus varying its capacitance and modulating the carrier current in circuit therewith.
