Abstract

1278239 Coiling helices F FASSETTA M BERNARD J BOYER and L TURPIN 23 Sept 1970 [30 Sept 1969] 45389/70 Heading B3E A machine for binding simultaneously the two ends of a beam or railway sleeper 2 with a round wire which is wound around the beam, severed and welded after the beam has been compressed between jaws, such operations being effected by devices located on heads 3, 4 displaceable parallel to the longitudinal axis of the beam on a rollway 6 by hydraulic jacks 10 is characterized in that the beam remains stationary during the bending which is effected by a winder arm 20 rotating around the beam which draws a wire from a reel under tension and the end of the wire is clamped to the beam by a jaw 34 having means for inserting, placing in position and maintaining the wire as well as devices for welding and severing the wire after welding. The beam is supported in a block 12 adjustable on the carriage 9 of the heads 3, 4. Each carriage includes a rotatable tubular shaft 19 carrying the winder arm 20 having support pulleys 21, 22 and a guide 23 for the wire 29 which is fed through the shaft 19 from a reel (not shown). The shaft is rotated by a chain and sprocket drive 27, 28. The beam is clamped in a window 11 in each block by jaws 30, 31 actuated by jacks 32, 33 (Fig. 4); opposite the lower jaw 30 is disposed the jaw 34 which has a trapezoidal section to form an inclined surface 35 on which the wire can slide at the end of the rotation about the beam into a groove 36 in the jaw. The wire is placed in the groove 36 by oscillation of an arm 41 actuated by a jack 43 (Fig. 10, not shown). At the end of the winding operation the block 12 is displaced sideways to effect an overlap of the wire prior to the welding and severing operation. An hydraulically-operated shoe 51 presses the ends 48, 49 of the wire against the beam and a welding torch 54 is actuated to weld the ends together. A cutter 55 obliquely situated on the side of the jaw 34 is actuated by a jack 57 to cut only the portion 48 of the wire and bends the cut end downwardly into the beam to effect an anchorage. A conveyer 5 conveys the bound beam towards a further treatment station, e.g. a slotting station, and feeds another beam into alignment with the shafts 19 for the next operation. The machine can be automatically controlled by a programming device.
