Abstract

1,264,344. Titanium from the tetrachloride. NIPPON SODA CO. Ltd. July 28, 1969 [July 29, 1968], No.37765/69. Heading C7D. A process for the preparation of high purity metallic titanium, comprises a first step which consists of reacting at least 0À5% excess over the stoichiometric amount of titanium tetrachloride with metallic sodium or potassium in an inert atmosphere at 600-800‹C., a second step of heating the product mixture to over 900‹C. for at least ¢ hour and a third step of recovering sponge titanium by leaching in an aqueous medium. The first two steps are preferably carried out without agitation. The temperature in the second step is preferably maintained between 900 and 950‹C. for 1 to 10 hours. The leaching medium may be dilute hydrochloric acid or water. The stoichiometric excess is preferably 1-2%. As an inert atmosphere argon gas may be used.
